On Sunday, Russia accused Ukraine of attacking the headquarters of its Black Sea Fleet in the annexed Crimean peninsula, and authorities in Nikolayev, in southern Ukraine, said the city had come under the heaviest bombardment of the entire conflict.

On the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Moscow in 2014, a drone landed in the courtyard of the fleet headquarters, according to pro-Russian authorities, injuring six personnel in the explosion.

The attack forced the city to cancel the annual celebrations of the Russian army, but they remained in St. Petersburg, in the western Russiawhere a military parade was held, in the presence of President Vladimir Putin.

There, Putin assured that the Russian Navy would receive a new hypersonic missile “in the coming months” and signed a new naval doctrine to strengthen Russia’s position in the Arctic.

This is the first time that the Russian authorities have reported such an attack since the start of their offensive in Ukraine 24 February.

A representative of the Odessa Regional State Administration denied this information. Ukraine was behind the attack and called the Russian allegations a “deliberate provocation”.

“Massive” shelling in Nikolaev

Meanwhile, the authorities in Nikolaev, in the south Ukrainecondemning on Sunday the large-scale Russian bombing in the early hours that killed at least two civilians.

“Today in Nikolaev there was a massive shelling. Probably the strongest at the moment,” Mayor Alexander Senkevich wrote on Telegram.

According to Ukrainian authorities, the victims are Oleksiy Vadatursky, owner of a major Ukrainian grain logistics company, and his wife, Raisa Vadaturskaya. Both were in their home at the time of the explosion, the same sources assure.

Zelensky’s adviser Mykhailo Podoliak said his death was not an accident but “a well-planned murder.”

Nikolaev is the largest urban center controlled by Ukraine near the front line in the Kherson region, where the Ukrainian army launched a counteroffensive in order to regain control over the economically and strategically important coastal territory.

More than half the population of this city of 500,000 has fled since the beginning of the war.

Russia it also hit the Kharkiv and Sumy regions in the northeast of the country, not far from the front line.

“Today there was a series of explosions … apparently some buildings were damaged,” said Ihor Tereev, the mayor of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city.

According to the head of the Sumy region, Dmitry Zhivitsky, on Saturday night, as a result of 50 attacks, one person was killed and two were injured.

Evacuations in Donetsk

In Donetsk, one of two Donbas regions where Moscow concentrates the bulk of its attacks in the east, three civilians were killed and eight wounded in shelling on Saturday, according to the regional governor.

On Sunday, AFP journalists saw an ambulance pick up a man after heavy fighting in the town of Bakhmut.

A few hours earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the population of the Donetsk region to evacuate.

“Evacuate, we will help you,” the president said. “At this stage of the war, terror is the main weapon Russia”, he added.

Ukrainian officials estimate that there are between 200,000 and 220,000 civilians in the region.

“Objective Research”

The call to Zelensky came after the bombing of a prison with Ukrainian prisoners of war in Olenivka, a Moscow-controlled city in the area.

Dozens of people died in the attack, and both sides blame each other for what happened.

On Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry said it had invited the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the UN to visit the site so that an “objective investigation” could be carried out.

But the ICRC said in a statement at 1500 GMT that it had not received “official confirmation” of a visit to the site.

Although they are “ready to go to Olenevka,” as they have been keeping detachments in the area since 2014, when clashes with pro-Russian separatist forces began.

After the attack, Zelenskiy stepped up calls for the international community, especially the United States, to formally declare Russia as a “state sponsor of terrorism”.

Regarding the grain shipment, Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin confirmed that there is a “high possibility” that the first ship will leave the port of Odessa on Monday morning, under the terms of an agreement reached on July 22. .
