Devastating floods recorded in Kentucky At least 25 people have died and the death toll is expected to rise. This was announced by the governor of that state in the south of the United States, at a time when rescuers continue to search for survivors.
Heavy rains earlier this week caused unprecedented flash flooding in eastern Kentucky, a region hard hit by poverty.
“We have some difficult news to share from the East Kentucky today, where we are still in the search and rescue phase. Our death toll has risen to 25 and that number is likely to rise,” the governor said. Andy Beshear, which previously indicated a balance of 16 deaths.
“To all Eastern Kentuckians, we will be there today and in the coming weeks, months and years. We’ll get through this together.”
The president has previously said hundreds have been rescued by boat since the floods began Wednesday night, and National Guard helicopters have carried out dozens of air rescues.
In some parts of the state, more than 200 millimeters of rain fell in a day. For example, the water level in the North Branch of the Kentucky River, in the town of Whitesburg, broke its record in just a few hours, reaching seven meters.
The flood turned many roads into rivers, and some houses in low-lying areas were almost completely submerged with only their roofs visible.
US President Joe Biden declared the state a “natural disaster” and approved federal reinforcements to support areas affected by “storms, floods, landslides and avalanches.”
In December, dozens of violent tornadoes ripped through five central US states, mostly Kentucky, killing at least 79 people.
Monkeypox continues to plague the US
New York State (USA) has declared a state of emergency due to an increase in monkeypox cases in recent days, mostly concentrated in New York City.
The state has already reported 1,400 cases of monkeypox, according to a state of emergency signed by Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul.
The emergency declaration authorizes government agencies to allocate funds and resources to help communities fight the disease.
