Representatives of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Commons have planned a trip to the partially recognized state at the end of the year, British publications said.
Members of the British House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee are scheduled to visit Taiwan in November or early December this year, despite growing tensions in the region. This was reported by The Guardian, citing its sources.
The media reported that the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Tom Tugendhat, will lead the British delegation.
The trip was originally planned for the beginning of this year, but it was postponed due to a positive test for the coronavirus in one of the members of the delegation. The visit itself was meant to show Britain’s support for Taiwan.
The publication said the trip was planned against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between London and Beijing. Both Conservative Party leader candidates Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have expressed their tough stance on China.
The Chinese Ambassador to the UK, in a video message, accused some British politicians of “spreading the fallacy of the so-called China threat.”
International political tensions have risen in recent days following reports of a possible trip to Taiwan by the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi. Official Beijing has warned against such a move, and has threatened to take “decisive action” if the visit takes place.
Nancy Pelosi will visit Taiwan as part of her Asia tour despite warnings from Biden administration officials concerned about China’s reaction to the visit, media outlets said.
Remember, the media reported that the United States is moving forces, including aircraft carriers and large aircraft, closer to Taiwan ahead of Pelosi’s expected visit to the island.
It was previously reported that the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, will arrive in Taiwan on the evening of Tuesday, August 2.
