Chisinau considers the most pessimistic scenarios for the expansion of the war in Ukraine and intends to ask Bucharest for help if they materialize.
Moldova turned to Romania for help if the conflict in Ukraine spread to its territory, and relations with the Russian Federation worsened. This was announced on July 29 by President Maia Sandu after a meeting with Romanian leader Klaus Iohannis, Deschide reports.
“We are worried. We are considering the most pessimistic scenarios. Accordingly, we are preparing for all scenarios. And in a situation where Russia tries to attack the Republic of Moldova, we will obviously ask help,” insisted Sandu.
Iohannis, for his part, assured that Bucharest will not leave Chisinau “regardless of the scenario.”
“We remain closer to the Republic of Moldova and will not leave you, regardless of the scenario in which we all find ourselves as a result of this unfortunate war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine,” he said.
It was previously reported that the Moldovan Parliament supported the government’s proposal to extend the state of emergency in the country in connection with the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis and the need to solve the refugee problem.
