The Russian women’s chess team was accepted for the World Cup.
They will have a neutral status under the flag of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), provided that the letter-no decoration is received from the International Olympic Committee.
Fide added that the decision is based on a precedent, when neutral teams from vulnerable groups (youth and players with disabilities) are allowed to participate in team competitions.
In September 2024, at the General Assembly of FID, the Russian Arkadi Dvartovich tried to return the Russian and Belarusian chess players to the competition in accordance with the national flags, but this initiative failed.
41 countries defended the preservation of sanctions. The compromise decision was the mitigation of restrictions for children under the age of 12 and persons with disabilities that were supported by 66 countries.
