Military exercises by the United States and South Korea are worsening the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the DPRK Foreign Ministry said.
On the anniversary of the cease-fire that ended hostilities on the peninsula 69 years ago, North Korea accused the US and South Korea of fomenting a conflict that could lead to a “second Korean war.” This was reported by Bloomberg on July 27, citing a statement by the DPRK Foreign Ministry.
Pyongyang has stressed that joint military exercises between the US and South Korea are exacerbating the situation on the Korean Peninsula, calling the allies a “herd” that provokes “terrible wars.”
This month, the United States and South Korea conducted joint maneuvers involving F-35A fighter jets.
The agency recalled that North Korea has for decades called military exercises “a prelude to an invasion.” The current announcement coincides with the July 27 signing of an armistice agreement between US-led UN forces, North Korea and China that led to a cease-fire during the 1950-1953 Korean War.
Despite the fact that the agreement that would formally end the war was never signed, North Korea celebrates this day as a victory.
The US has argued for years that if North Korea wants a formal peace treaty and diplomatic relations, it must end its nuclear weapons program.
It can be recalled that Ukraine severed diplomatic relations with North Korea after Pyongyang recognized the “DNR” and “LNR”. Kyiv views this move as an attempt to undermine the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
