The head of government called the proposal to reach the indicator of 5% “irrational and counter -productive.”
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez told NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that Madrid would not agree to increase defense costs to 5% of GDP and called this optional goal. This is known by EFE on Thursday, June 19.
In a letter from Rutta, the Spanish government head of the Spanish government was called a proposal for defense costs to 5% of the GDP “irrational and counter -productive”.
“For Spain, as well as for other NATO countries, it is impossible to reach the level of 5% in defense costs without increasing taxes for the middle class, reducing public services and social payments or reducing obligations in the field of” green “transformation and development,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez insisted that the purpose of 2% was sufficient to fulfill NATO obligations. According to him, Spain is one of the leaders of the Alliance in terms of growth in the defense budget, and this year it will reach a 2% of GDP bar.
“Spain will continue to fulfill its role in the coming years and decades, but cannot take obligations to a certain percentage of costs within the GDP,” he added.
The head of the government also warned that the race for 5% could force the country to buy weapons outside the EU and prevent its own industry.
However, Spain’s Prime Minister admitted that the Russian Federation brings a “existing threat”, so he promoted a stronger NATO with “complete devotion of the United States” and Europe.
Earlier, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Spain, with the lowest cost of defending NATO, would develop and begin to implement a plan for strengthening the Tag -Sales defense sector.
Keep in mind that this year Spain will spend an additional 2.08 billion euro ($ 2.28 billion) in defense by redistributing funds for contracts of obtaining the Ministry of Defense, as the country faces pressure from NATO allies, which requires it to achieve planned costs.
