An IRIS-T SLM installation can protect a large city from air strikes. Kyiv requested 11 units.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is delaying the transfer to Ukraine of 11 IRIS-T SLM air defense systems, which Kyiv intends to buy directly from a German company. The Welt am Sonntag newspaper reported this, citing its own sources.
According to the publication, the request from the Ukrainian side was submitted in early July, and the German Ministry of Economy approved it. The final decision must be made by the Federal Government, which contains the chancellor’s office.
As stated in the material, there has been no progress on this issue over the past three weeks.
It was noted that the cost of an IRIS-T system is about 140 million euros, all 11 – about 1.5 billion euros. Kyiv, with the financial support of Berlin, wants to buy air defense directly from the manufacturer – Diehl Defense.
At the same time, as indicated, the delivery of the first IRIS-T to Ukraine may be carried out before the end of this year. Then the migration of all the promised systems will take four to five years, Welt calculated.
The newspaper emphasizes that such an installation could protect a large city from air strikes.
Earlier in Berlin, they said that the IRIS-T air defense system promised to Ukraine is still in the production stage in Germany. It will be ready for transfer to Ukraine by the end of summer.
