Sexual violence was committed “at gunpoint, in the presence of family members” as a result of Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
Since the beginning of Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine, the UN has received more than 150 complaints about cases of sexual violence committed by the Russian military. Pramila Patten, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, said during the Second Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen.
“Since February 24, the UN has received more than 150 accusations of sexual violence committed against women, children and men. These are rapes at gunpoint, in the presence of family members as a result of an attack on Ukraine by Russian troops,” Patten said during a video message.
According to him, this kind of violence is often silenced, so “we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg.”
Recall that the Second International Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen, initiated by the wife of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, Elena, is taking place in Kyiv.
Foreign leading couples, as well as celebrities, world-leading experts and dignitaries are invited to participate in the event, and the event itself is broadcast in more than 20 countries around the world.
As reported, at the end of May, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine submitted to the court the first case of rape during the war – the Russian soldier Mikhail Romanov will be tried for the murder of a civilian man and sexual assault -abusing his wife.
