In Hungary, they want to limit activities or even close the media with foreign financing.
More than 80 European news newspapers have signed a petition with appeal to prevent the adoption of the law on the restriction of media and human rights funded from abroad in Hungary. On Tuesday, May 20, Reuters reported.
The bill, last week, filed by the nationalist party of prime minister Viktor Orban Fides, provides for a list of organizations that accept foreign financing. This should limit their activities, or even close such organizations if the government decides to threaten Hungary and its culture.
It was noted that this initiative was strictly criticized by Hungarian news agencies, analytical centers and human rights groups. They argue that the bill aims to prevent the difference in politics and criticism of the government.
Petition signatures said the fides “applies the same authority tactics observed” in Russia by Putin with the provision of “foreign agents”.
At the same time, it is emphasized that free press safety is the problem of both Hungary and the whole of Europe, “especially in the region, where more and more population leaders have adopted Orban methods.”
The petition was signed by 84 editors, including publications such as Guardian (Great Britain), Liberation (France), Gazeta Wyborcza (Poland), ORF (Austria), SME (Slovakia) and Hospodarske Noviny (Czech Republic).
They have called on their European Union governments and institutions to make efforts to prevent the adoption of the law, indicating that it contradicts the EU and Charter of Basic Rights.
