The reason for Brussels’ decision is the fear that the export restriction of VSMPO-Avisma could provoke a retaliatory measure from Moscow.
In the European Union, at the last moment, they decided not to include the Russian metallurgical company VSMPO-Avisma in the seventh package of sanctions for the Russian Federation. This was reported on Thursday, July 21 by The Wall Street Journal, citing EU diplomats.
Thus, the aforementioned legal entity must be subject to defense-related restrictions, as the company supplies materials for the production of Russian jet fighters, including those that participated in the war against Ukraine.
However, the EU has not taken such a step.
As indicated, the reason for the change of Brussels’ decision is the fear that the restriction of exports of VSMPO-Avisma could provoke a retaliatory measure by Moscow to stop the sale of titanium to companies from the EU.
In particular, the article mentions commercial aircraft manufacturer Airbus SE, for which VSMPO-Avisma is an important supplier of titanium. It was noted that the shareholders of Airbus are France, Spain and Germany.
In addition, the newspaper found that Russia supplies up to half of the titanium for the world’s aerospace industry. According to data from May this year, the European aircraft manufacturer itself bought about 65% of its titanium from a Russian company.
Recall that the introduction of the seventh package of EU sanctions against Russia for its aggression against Ukraine was announced the day before. The “black” list includes 48 Russians and seven Russian companies.
