The new ruling coalition, led by Chancellor Friedrich Mertz, decided to significantly increase Germany’s defenses.
According to Foreign Minister Johann Vadiful, after a meeting with the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Turkey, Berlin will strive for a goal of 5% of GDP – more than 215 billion euros per year.
Now Germany spends about 2% of the gross domestic product on defense, but even these obligations often failed.
This is a significant shift in a paradigm in German politics. We expect a gradual achievement of the goal no later than 2030. This will not happen immediately, but this should happen, ”said the expert on foreign policy and protection of the CDU RHODERICH KIZETTER in a conversation with Bild.
The government initiative is associated with the pressure of the United States and NATO: by 2023, Germany should financially provide 10% of the defensive efforts of the alliance. Washington requires that all NATO members allocate 5% of GDP for defense, although most countries believe that this requirement is impossible.
At the Summit of Foreign Ministers NATO Johan Vadiful confirmed that Germany supports the US position:
We share the assessment of Trump that is necessary.
