“This increase in vaccination coverage shows that African countries remain committed to vaccinating against COVID-19,” said Africa Director WHO, Matshidiso Moeti.
“This is reassuring because vaccination remains the most effective tool in our response to COVID-19 on the continent,” Moeti added.
Several countries that stepped up their vaccination response in 2021 have made notable progress in expanding primary series coverage over the past six months, including Ethiopia from 3.5% to 33%, Côte d’Ivoire (from 9% to 25, 8%), Zambia (from 3.5% to 25.2%) and Uganda (from 4.4% to 25.5%).
To date, about 11.9 million cases COVID-19 have been reported across the continent, of which nearly 255,000 have resulted in death, according to the latest data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Africa (Africa CDC), a body owned by the African Union (AU).
