The European Commission is preparing an action plan after Putin warned of further cuts in gas supplies.
The European Union is developing emergency plans to limit gas consumption after Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the bloc that Russian supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline would be further reduced. On Wednesday, July 20, according to Reuters.
It was noted that the European Commission’s plan provides for a reduction in gas consumption. The project proposes a voluntary target for countries to reduce consumption over the next eight months, which could become legally binding in the event of an emergency.
In particular, the EU said the target reduction would be 10-15%, while any plan would require the approval of bloc members from 27 countries. But EU officials say it is important to act now rather than wait to see what happens to flows through Nord Stream 1 or other routes.
“We believe that a complete collapse is likely, and it is more likely if we do not act and leave ourselves vulnerable to it,” said one of the EU’s leadership agency sources.
He also added that if Europe does not act now, it will be more expensive, and this means that “we are dancing to the tune of Russia.”
Remember, Putin said that gas pumping through the Nord Stream-1 gas pipeline can be reduced to 1/5 of the capacity – that is, to 33 million cubic meters. m per day – if one of the Siemens gas turbines, after the exhaustion of its resource, is not replaced by a repaired one in Canada.
On the eve of the media it was reported that the volume of exports through the Nord Stream-1 gas pipeline will decrease after Russia resumes gas supplies on Thursday, July 21.
At the same time, the European Commission suggests that it is not worth waiting for the restart of the Nord Stream-1 gas pipeline after the annual 10-day maintenance. This is what European Commissioner for Budget Johannes Hahn said in a briefing in Singapore.
