The Baltic countries turned off their energy systems from the Russian government and Belarus. This connection has existed since the time of the USSR.
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia should be associated with the continental European energy grid through the Lithuanian political connection, writes Latvian media LSM.
The reunion should take place tomorrow, while the Ministry of Energy Systems works if energy systems operate in isolated mode.
This is another historical day for European integration – the event was commented on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia.
In July 2024, the Baltic Energy Ministers confirmed the intentions to synchronize their states using the energy system of continental European energy and disconnect from Russian in February 2025.
Until now, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, together with Russia and Belarus, have worked in the general power supply system, which is centrally controlled from Moscow. At the same time, in May 2022, the Baltic countries completely stopped importing electricity from the Russian Federation.
Without connection with the general Russian energy system, so the Kaliningrad region remained.
Nevertheless, they argue that there will be no problems with this, because local power plants are supposedly fully provided by Russian exclusive ones, which will now work in the Energy Island mode.
The disconnection of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia from the Russian Belarusian energy system is an important event for the whole of Europe. In the end, Russia, which always uses energy resources for its political purposes, continues to lose its influence on the energy sphere of European countries. It is these steps that deprive the aggressor of the opportunity to use electricity for blackmail and political games, – commented on the decision of the BAS of the Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko.
