Ukraine’s statement against Russia in the International Court of Justice was supported by more than 40 countries

More than 40 countries have supported Ukraine’s application against Russia to the International Court of Justice. This is stated in a statement by a group of countries, published on the website of the German Foreign Ministry.

“We reiterate our support for Ukraine’s application to bring proceedings against the Russian Federation before the International Court of Justice under the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. The application seeks to establish that Russia has no legitimate grounds for military action in Ukraine.We reiterate the importance of these proceedings and call on the Russian Federation to immediately suspend its military operations in Ukraine, as determined by the court in its decision on interim measure on March 16, 2022.

The signatories noted the importance of this process and they call on Russia to immediately stop fighting in Ukraine, as decided by the EU Court of Justice in its decision on preventive measures on March 16, 2022. The Court’s decision is legal. which binds the parties, so if Russia does not comply with it, it is another violation of its obligations under international law, the statement said.

“Russia must be held accountable for its actions. In this regard, we believe that Russia’s violation of international law requires international responsibility of the country, and the damage suffered by Ukraine as a result of Russia’s violations of international law must be paid immediately, in accordance with the principle of state responsibility on the part of Russia in full, “the document said.
