Trump said that Europe is lagging behind the United States in terms of aid to Ukraine. Callas called the European Union the largest international donor, citing arguments.
EU High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said that US President Donald Trump’s statement that Europe is lagging behind the US in terms of aid to Ukraine is not true. He said this in an interview with Reuters.
“According to my calculations, we gave Ukraine more than 134 billion euros.
He mentioned the importance of Europe being involved in all negotiations to end the war started by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
According to Reuters, some European officials have expressed concern that Trump may try to conclude a deal directly with Vladimir Putin.
“Regardless of the negotiations or agreements between Russia and Ukraine, it also applies to Europe. Therefore, “nothing about Europe without Europe” is also the main thing here,” said Kallas.
He expressed some optimism that the EU will reach an agreement to maintain sanctions on Russia until they expire at the end of the month.
“I see no reason to ease or lift the sanctions now,” said the EU High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
He added that EU officials were studying what else could be done with Russian assets frozen within the bloc. So far, the bloc has used revenues from the assets to help Ukraine, but not the assets themselves.
Callas has previously said the European Union is ready to take on a leadership role if US support for Ukraine stops.
