The terrorist attack in the center of Zhitomir was planned to be carried out by two attackers in collaboration with Russian intelligence services.
The press service of the National Police reported this today, January 23.
It is noted that the attackers planned to blow up the police squad, for which they made a fake call to special line 102 to a pre-rented apartment.
Thanks to the coordinated work of law enforcement officers, it was possible to identify dangerous objects in time and detain the defendants. For what they have committed, they face imprisonment for up to 12 years with confiscation of property, the police said.
It has been previously established that:
- two 19-year-old residents of the Dnepropetrovsk region received assignments from the Russian special services through the Telegram channel;
- young people were instructed to pick up a bag with unknown contents at the geolocation indicated to them in the Andrushevsky community of Zhytomyr region.
- on the instructions of the curator, they hid the things inside the house and left it open. They themselves settled in one of the hotels in the city, awaiting further instructions. For this “work” they were promised a generous reward.
During the special operation, the police, together with the SBU, worked proactively: they documented all the attackers’ preparations for the terrorist attack and detained both defendants in the hotel, the police said.
During the inspection of the apartment, law enforcement officers:
- They found an improvised explosive device disguised in a soft toy, a portable speaker and a thermos with an explosive substance;
- found two mobile phones, which were intended for surveillance and activation of explosives.
Currently, law enforcement officers are establishing the identity of the customer who coordinated the criminal actions. A number of examinations have been appointed to establish the composition of the seized substances.
Both detainees were informed of suspicion under Part 2 of Art. 15 and part 2 of Art. 258 (attempted terrorist act committed by prior conspiracy by a group of persons) of the Criminal Code. They face imprisonment for a term of seven to 12 years with confiscation of property.
The court chose preventive measures in the form of detention.
