Keith Kellogg has a plan to end the war, but Donald Trump controls the negotiations.
US President Donald Trump has tasked the special representative for Ukraine and Russia, General Keith Kellogg, to end the war in Ukraine within 100 days. However, almost no one believed that he could do it, especially the Russians. The Wall Street Journal reported this yesterday.
As the newspaper notes, Kellogg’s role as special envoy is likely to be the first step in the peace negotiations, which Trump intends to personally oversee.
According to the former national security adviser in the first Trump administration, John Bolton, the American leader in the upcoming negotiations may force Kyiv to make “devastating concessions” to Moscow.
“I think Putin knows how to play with Trump, and Kellogg will probably be a check on Putin’s influence. He will just do what Trump tells him. He may protest for a while, but Trump chose not to Kellogg for his independent judgment.” Bolton said.
Kellogg’s former colleagues explained that he was appointed envoy to Ukraine after he co-authored a peace plan that criticized the Joe Biden administration for being slow to provide military aid while accusing it of prodding Moscow. by pushing Kyiv to join NATO.
The plan was published by the America First Policy Institute, a think tank that supports Trump’s policies. It called for a ceasefire and a negotiated settlement using “carrots and sticks” to force Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table.
The publication recalls that Kellogg’s plan recommended that NATO wait until Ukraine is accepted into the Alliance and offer Russia a softening of sanctions in exchange for signing a peace treaty. The plan also called for the cessation of military aid to Kyiv if the Ukrainian government did not agree to peace negotiations.
Then in Russia this plan was ridiculed as if it had no prospects. At the same time, the political scientist and defense expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Seth Jones, called Kellogg a serious analyst, whose presence in Trump’s entourage is intended to give weight to the decision-making on Ukraine in the White House . However, Jones noted that the Kremlin’s personal attacks on Kellogg and his plan do not bode well for any agreement.
“The negotiations have not even started, and they are already attacking the top American involved. This is not good for negotiations or even a ceasefire,” he said.
Earlier, the media reported that Trump ordered to arrange a telephone conversation with Putin. The topic of the conversation was to discuss a possible personal meeting in the coming months.
Earlier in the day, Trump said Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky was ready for a deal to end the war. Putin may be prompted to negotiate by economic difficulties in the Russian Federation. The US President also called the introduction of new sanctions against the Russian Federation “likely”.
