United States President Donald Trump signed his first executive orders on January 20 after his inauguration.
In particular, he appointed temporary heads of government, in particular the Pentagon. Trump also ordered the US withdrawal from the World Health Organization and the Paris climate agreement.
Even before his inauguration, Trump announced that he would sign a number of decrees that would repeal the laws of his predecessor and withdraw the United States from some world organizations. On his first day in office, he signed the following documents:
An order temporarily suspending all U.S. foreign assistance programs for 90 days pending reviews to determine whether they meet his policy objectives.
The president delayed the TikTok ban, which was due to take effect on January 19, for 75 days, writes Reuters. The document allows the new administration time to determine the appropriate course of action on TikTok.
Trump withdraws the US from the Paris climate agreement. It aims to limit global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Washington will have to wait a year for an official release.
The White House website also published a decree on the US withdrawal from the WHO. The new American leader explained his decision by the WHO’s “mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the organization’s “failure to reform” and too high contributions from the United States.
Trump has pardoned nearly 1,270 people convicted of storming the Capitol on January 6, CNN writes. He ordered the Justice Department to close about 300 pending cases and ordered the dismissal of 14 defendants accused of serious plots to overthrow the government.
Trump has eliminated the provision allowing transgender military personnel to serve in the US Armed Forces, writes Politico. He canceled this decision in his first term, but Biden returned it.
