Donald Trump, the new US President, answering questions from journalists on the evening of his inauguration day, said that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky “wants to make an agreement” regarding the Russian war in Ukraine.
Trump also expressed hope that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin should also be ready for an agreement, because “he is destroying Russia by not making an agreement,” Voice of America reports.
I think Russia has big problems. Just look at inflation in Russia,” Trump said. “I would hope he wants to make an agreement.”
Commenting on the possibility of sanctions against Russia, Trump said that he prefers tariffs over sanctions.
Trump also noted that he plans to hold a meeting with Putin, but did not disclose details about the possible timing of such a meeting, noting that “it could happen quite quickly.”
The US President confirmed that he is trying to end Russia’s war in Ukraine “as quickly as possible” and repeated his campaign thesis that this war “should never have started”:
It wouldn’t have started if I were president.
Trump also noted significant losses among the Russian and Ukrainian military.
In addition, he said that the United States provides more assistance to Ukraine than other NATO countries.
NATO should pay more. “NATO must pay 5%,” Trump said, repeating his demand for NATO countries to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. No NATO country, including the United States, currently spends so much on defense.
