The United States has notified Russia that it has agreed to appoint a new Russian ambassador to Washington. A new ambassador could be officially appointed in the coming weeks. This was said by the head of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian parliament, Grigory Karasin, Reuters reports.
“Permission has not been given yet,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in an interview with Russian propaganda media.
The name of the new ambassador is not yet officially known. The last Russian Ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, was dismissed from his post in October 2023.
According to the Russian newspaper Kommersant, the new Russian ambassador to Washington is likely to be Alexander Darchiev, who is currently the head of the Foreign Ministry’s North American department.
