On the eve of Donald Trump’s inauguration, a dispatch from German Ambassador to the United States Andreas Michaelis was leaked to the press. The diplomat predicts “the maximum concentration of presidential powers at the expense of Congress and the states.”
He believes that the possibility of unilateral foreign policy steps and military decisions on the part of the United States is growing.
It claims that Trump’s policies “threaten the democratic foundations of the United States.”
Michaelis describes Trump’s plans as a “overhaul of the constitutional order” to concentrate power in the hands of the president. The cable noted that “democratic principles will be largely undermined” and Trump’s plans include “mass deportations” and “revenge” on political opponents. Of particular concern is the alleged appointment of “loyal” employees to key positions in the Department of Justice and the FBI.
The ambassador also expressed concern about Trump’s cooperation with billionaire Elon Musk. The cable states that together they allegedly intend to restrict freedom of speech in the United States. In addition, Trump plans to cancel the automatic acquisition of citizenship for migrant children, which Michaelis calls an example of limiting the rights of minorities.
Michaelis is 65 years old and has been working in Washington since August 2023. From 1999 to 2002, he was a representative of the German Foreign Ministry, when it was headed for the first time in history by the leader of the Green Party, Joschka Fischer.
The five-page letter was sent to Berlin with the lowest level of secrecy – “for official use.” He drew criticism, including from CDU/CSU leader Friedrich Merz, who said the United States does not need morality from Germany and promised to send Trump a handwritten personal letter.
It is Michaelis who will represent Germany at Trump’s inauguration; other guests from Berlin include representatives of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany, led by party co-chair Tino Chrupalla.
