Nigeria ranks sixth in the world and first on the African continent in terms of population, and it has one of the largest economies in Africa.
Nigeria joined the BRICS bloc as a partner country. This was announced on Saturday, January 18, by the government of Brazil, which presides over this year’s organization.
Nigeria becomes the ninth BRICS partner country, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
The Brazilian government noted that Nigeria has common interests with other BRICS members.
They added that Nigeria is playing an active role in global governance reform, and also welcomed the African country for its decision to join the bloc.
Nigeria believes BRICS will provide it with a “unique platform” to enhance trade, investment and socio-economic cooperation among member countries.
Nigeria ranks sixth in the world and first on the continent in terms of population (223.8 million people in 2023) and is among the largest economies in Africa.
Let’s recall that Indonesia has gained full membership in the BRICS international organization.
