Ukrainian Kristina Freeland begins the fight for the presidency of one of Canada’s largest parties. The previous head, Justin Trudeau, recently resigned from this position.
Freeland announced her candidacy for the leadership of the Liberal Party, betting that she can reverse the trend of declining ratings that has set the ruling party on a path to defeat in this year’s elections.
If she wins the internal party elections, she will become the new head of the Canadian government.
She will be up against Mark Carney, the former head of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, who officially launched his re-election campaign on Thursday.
The winner will become prime minister in March but is likely to face elections soon after as all the main opposition parties have said they plan to vote to oust the government.
The Liberal Party of Canada will elect a new leader on March 9. This means that by this date Justin Trudeau will be prime minister. Apparently, Trudeau’s final months in office will be tied to Canada’s initial response to Trump’s threats.
The Parliament of Canada will resume its work only on March 24.
