Both sides finally agreed to cease fire and release the hostages. The Israeli government must approve the deal on Friday.
Representatives of Israel and the Hamas group in the capital of Qatar officially signed an agreement on a cease-fire in Gaza and the release of hostages. The Times of Israel reported this on Friday, January 17, citing sources.
“The agreement was announced on Wednesday, but after that the negotiating teams continued discussions to finalize the implementation details,” the publication quoted one of the Arab officials as saying.
The disagreement concerns, in particular, the Palestinian prisoners that Israel should release. Ultimately, the issue was resolved by mediators, allowing representatives of Israel and Hamas to sign the final document.
Israel’s Cabinet is scheduled to meet on Friday to approve the deal. Although far-right ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir may vote against the document, it is expected to receive sufficient support from officials.
It will be recalled that on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden confirmed that after months of intense diplomacy, Israel and Hamas, through mediators, agreed to a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
Hamas had earlier approved a list of 34 hostages it was willing to release as part of a possible cease-fire deal with Israel.
