The incident occurred during a public tour. The Russians broke away from the group and entered the House of Lords. However, security discovered them and kicked them out.
Russian diplomats entered the closed part of the British Parliament during a public excursion. The Guardian writes about the incident that took place last month on Thursday, January 16.
It was noted that a small group of diplomats from the Russian Embassy joined the public tour of the parliament buildings. At a certain point, they broke off from the tour and entered the restricted access chamber of the House of Lords. Security found them there and kicked them out.
“We suspect they just wanted to make it clear to the Kremlin that they had infiltrated the British parliament. It wasn’t ideal, but they were caught before any damage could be done,” a parliamentary source told The Guardian.
At the same time, after the incident, members of parliament and their colleagues received a written warning from the speakers of both houses not to invite Russian diplomats to parliament.
“As an officially recognized representative of the Russian government, the Russian ambassador is not to be received in Parliament until further notice. This applies to all other Russian diplomats and Russian embassy staff recognized in the UK,” the letter said.
The Russian ambassador, diplomats and employees of the Russian Embassy in London have been banned from visiting the British Parliament since 2022, when Moscow carried out a large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Let’s remember that last year Switzerland accused a Russian diplomat of espionage.
And a few months ago, Russia expelled a British diplomat, accusing him of “intelligence and sabotage activities that threaten Russia’s security.”
