The Russian Federation may attack Ukraine again and that is why Kyiv needs reliable guarantees from its partners.
If Donald Trump recognizes that Ukraine’s success in resisting Russian aggression is in the interest of the United States, and provides Kyiv with all the necessary assistance, then Russia will experience collapse within a year. Retired General Ben Hodges, the former commander of US ground forces in Europe, said this on Tuesday, January 14, in a virtual discussion at the European Policy Center (EPC), writes Ukrinform.
“I can’t predict what President Trump will do. But I believe he may realize how weak Putin is, and how poor the Russian economy is. Ukraine beat Russia,” the general said.
At the same time, Ben Hodges recalled that Ukraine, due to its geographical location, will continue to remain at the center of events. Considering this, the general emphasized that the issue of protecting Ukraine from possible new aggressions from Russia can only be considered after its accession to NATO or when a significant Western military contingent is on -station on Ukrainian territory.
“If Ukraine was in NATO or had a strong American or European presence on its own territory, it could be in a stronger position. The most important step for a US president is to declare that Ukraine’s defeat of Russia is in the interest of America – and we will do whatever it takes to help Ukraine win if she does, Russia will fall within a year,” Hodges concluded.
We remind you that the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is preparing for contacts between President Vladimir Zelensky and Trump. They will take place after the inauguration of the new American leader.
Meanwhile, those around Trump are looking forward to talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin “in the coming days or weeks.” Preparations for their meeting are also currently underway.
