When representatives of the Finnish coast guard boarded the ship, the crew threatened to cut the second Estlink1 cable and disrupt the BalticConnector gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia.
The crew of the Eagle S tanker, suspected of destroying submarine cables in the Baltic Sea, threatened to cut another cable and a gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia. This was said by the head of the investigation, Risto Lohi from the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation, Reuters reports.
Lohi emphasized that by the time the Finnish coast guard representatives boarded, the crew had threatened to cut the second Estlink1 cable and interrupt the BalticConnector gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia.
“There would be an immediate risk of damage to other cables or pipes belonging to our critical undersea infrastructure,” Risto said.
There are now nine suspected crew members on the case – they are banned from travel. The priority people involved are those responsible for navigation and operations related to ship anchors.
We remind you that at the end of December, damage to four underwater communication cables was recorded in the Baltic Sea.
On December 26, Finland detained the ship Eagle S because one of the communication cables was cut. The ship may be part of the “shadow fleet” of the Russian Federation. According to media reports, spy equipment was found here.
