Discontent among some MPs increased following Fico’s visit to Moscow in December, where he met Russian President Putin.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has warned coalition partners of the possibility of early elections due to the ongoing political crisis. He said this in an interview with the Slovak TV channel ta3.
Fico set a clear deadline for the coalition until March to resolve the conflict.
“Something has to be resolved about this, otherwise it’s a straight road to hell,” he said.
Fico emphasized that if the Slovak National Party and the Golos party cannot ensure the stable functioning of the parliament, the only way is early elections.
The crisis began after three deputies left the SNP group, thereby leaving the government with a small majority – 76 votes out of 150. In November, the prime minister admitted that re-election was probably inevitable.
Additional problems for Fico were created by four representatives from the Golos party, which opposed several government initiatives. Their discontent intensified after Fico’s visit to Moscow in December, where he met with Russian President Putin.
Earlier, the leader of the opposition party Progressive Slovakia, Michal Šimečka, noted that the visit was an attempt by Fico to divert attention from internal problems in the coalition.
Earlier, the Prime Minister of Slovakia accused Kyiv of causing damage to Bratislava due to the cessation of Russian gas transit.
