In order for the head of state to participate in court hearings, it is necessary to resolve the issue of ensuring his personal safety.
South Korean President Yoon Seok-yol will not attend the first formal hearing of his impeachment trial by the Constitutional Court out of fear for his own safety. This is what the Korean leader’s lawyer, Yun Gap-gen, said, Yonhap reported.
“As attempts to execute the illegal and invalid arrest warrant against Yun continue, we are concerned about the president’s personal safety and possible provocations against him,” the lawyer said.
He added that for the head of state to participate in court hearings, it is necessary to resolve the issue of ensuring his personal safety.
Yun’s lawyers earlier said that the president will attend his impeachment trial in due course to present his position and reasoning for his decisions following the declaration of martial law in the country.
As it is known, the Constitutional Court plans on Tuesday, January 14, to begin the oral debate on the impeachment trial of the head of state and to hold only five hearings on February 4.
If Yoon fails to appear at Tuesday’s hearing, the court would have to postpone the hearing and schedule a second hearing for Thursday, which could be held in Yoon’s absence.
It was previously reported that South Korean authorities are preparing to make a second attempt to arrest President Yoon Suk-yol, who has been impeached. However, the head of state ignored the call for inquiry and barricaded himself in his villa.
We remind you that on December 3, the President of South Korea declared martial law in the country. He named the reason as the opposition, which, according to him, is an “anti-state force” that paralyzes the work of the country.
South Korea’s parliament has voted to lift martial law. And on December 14, President Yoon Seok Yeol was impeached. On December 31, the court issued a warrant for his arrest.
