During the summer of 2024, over 3,000 children from the temporarily occupied territories of the Kherson region were taken by the occupation authorities for “re-education.”
This was announced today, January 11, with reference to information from open sources, by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets.
According to Lubinets:
- under the guise of recreation, health, cultural and educational programs, 3 thousand 310 children were moved to various camps in remote regions of Russia;
- among the so-called events for children are a defense and sports meeting in Vologda and “University changes” organized in Tula;
- Russians involve Ukrainian children in excursions, master classes, sports competitions, as well as in programs that promote forced assimilation and militarization.
I am sure that these actions are part of the purposeful strategy of the Russian Federation aimed at destroying the national identity of Ukrainian children by inculcating Russian culture, history and language, and involving them in the future in the fight against their native country, Lubinets notes.
Russia’s goal is to create a generation deprived of its national memory, he added.
The Ombudsman noted that Ukraine will seek punishment for anyone who encroaches on the life, safety, and existence of Ukrainian children who were forced to find themselves under the rule of the aggressor.
We must not remain silent. Ukraine, together with international partners, continues to fight to return every child home and bring those responsible to justice,” he concluded.
