The main task of the new division was to protect the main infrastructure and military nodes on German territory in the event of a crisis or armed conflict.
Another large Bundeswehr unit will be created in Germany – the territorial defense division (Heimatschutzdivision). Bild reported this in connection with the German army on Saturday, January 11.
It is indicated that this division “will consist of reservists and active military personnel and will be subordinate to one command.”
The decision to create such a unit was made against the backdrop of instructions from Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who noted the need to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities due to new threats.
The main task of the new division was to protect the main infrastructure and military nodes on German territory in the event of a crisis or armed conflict.
“The territorial defense forces are intended to be used as part of protective and security measures, as well as for the protection of objects – that is, in the case of national defense scenarios,” the Bundeswehr said.
It is planned to combine the existing reservist units and some regiments in the new structure: in the summer of 2025, the German terrorist defense should consist of about 6 thousand people.
However, military experts consider this number insufficient to fully protect Germany’s key infrastructure. Therefore, it is assumed that the division will subsequently expand, and the concept of territorial defense will be improved.
In this regard, DW wrote that from April 1, the territorial defense forces will be directly subordinated to the German Ground Forces. Currently, they have only three divisions: two tank divisions (1st and 10th), as well as a rapid reaction force division. Each has about 20 thousand military personnel. The territorial defense division will be the fourth.
It was previously known that the Bundeswehr will need up to 35 thousand additional soldiers to meet NATO’s new defense requirements. We are talking about an additional five to six brigades.
