The United States will continue to provide military assistance to Ukraine to strengthen its position in the event of negotiations with the Russian Federation.
Neither Ukraine nor the Russian Federation is ready for negotiations. The spokesman of the National Security Council, John Kirby, said this on Friday, January 10, at a briefing at the White House, commenting on the US sanctions against the Russian oil sector, Ukrinform writes.
“Right now there is no expectation that either side is willing to negotiate,” he said.
Commenting on the new sanctions against the Russian Federation, Kirby noted that now is the right time for it because “the oil markets are in a better position fundamentally” and the US economy is ready to withstand any market shocks.
Kirby noted that the sanctions come days before Trump takes office, but countered that they are intended as a bargaining chip for future peace talks.
Kirby recalled that since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the benchmark oil price has fallen by nearly $35 a barrel. The average price of gas in the United States has fallen from about $4 to over $3 per gallon.
He also noted that the sanctions are part of a broader effort, as the Biden administration has provided about $64 billion in military aid to Ukraine since the invasion. That includes $500 million this week for air defense missiles, air-to-surface munitions and fighter support equipment.
Biden aides briefed Trump aides on sanctions. But he could remove any of Biden’s sanctions. However, any administration that wishes to repeal the new sanctions must notify Congress and give Congress the opportunity to cast a vote of disapproval.
We remind you that the US authorities have announced new large-scale sanctions against the Russian oil sector. The new restrictions cover more than 400 individuals and organizations in Russia’s energy sector that directly or indirectly fund the Kremlin’s war machine.
As reported, Russia reduced oil exports to a 16-month low – volumes decreased by 540 thousand barrels per day compared to the highest level in October.
