The team of the future president has already admitted that they will not end the war in 24 hours, but they are determined to support Ukraine.
US President-elect Donald Trump will not be able to quickly end the war in Ukraine. Representatives of his team admitted this in talks with European partners, the Financial Times reported on Thursday, January 9, citing two European officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Discussions with Trump’s new team in recent weeks have indicated that they have not yet decided how to resolve the war, the officials said, but noted that support for Ukraine will continue after Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration.
“The whole (Trump – ed.) team is obsessed with power and wants to look stronger, so they are adjusting their approach to Ukraine,” said one of the sources.
He added that the new US administration is also wary of comparisons with the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, and Trump does not want this to happen again in Ukraine.
The publication notes that Trump’s team has changed the time frame for resolving the war in Ukraine from “24 hours” to several months, “which European partners see as a sign that his administration will not immediately will abandon its support for Kyiv.”
According to the FT, European interlocutors are convincing Trump and his team that extending US military aid is necessary to strengthen Kyiv’s position in peace negotiations and help bring Moscow back to the negotiating table.
We remind you that the Special Representative of the newly elected US President for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, has postponed his visit to Ukraine. He then said his goal was to try to find a solution to the war within 100 days of Donald Trump’s inauguration.
