Wonsan-Kalma can host up to 100 thousand visitors at once, but among the disadvantages is a nearby missile test site where ballistic weapons are tested.
In June, the giant Wonsan-Kalma resort complex is set to open on North Korea’s east coast, where DPRK authorities hope to boost the country’s economy. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) published footage of the new resort, which the country’s leader Kim Jong-in inspected with his daughter.
The new tourist town is located along a five-kilometer beach on an area of 2.5 km² and includes 150 buildings, including 54 hotels, as well as shops, restaurants, water parks, cinemas, stadiums and airports . The project was called “North Korean Benidorm” – in honor of the famous resort in Spain that served as a prototype for Kim and his officials.
Judging by the published footage, the complex considers various requests. Along with small budget buildings, there are VIP cottages and multi-storey buildings with white grand pianos in the halls, swimming pools and ponds. Wonsan Kalma is expected to accommodate up to 100 thousand visitors at once.
The downside of the resort is the presence of a missile test site nearby, where ballistic weapons are tested.
Kim Jong-un hopes that, along with other projects, Wonsan-Kalma will improve the economy and the living standards of the population, as well as “completely change the appearance of the country.”
First of all, Russians are welcome at the new resort, reports The Moscow Times. Last year, North Korean state travel agency Korean International Travel Company released a video special for them with a story about local beaches.
Kim called the construction of Wonsan Kalma “the first major step of great importance in putting the national tourism industry on the path of development of the era.” The North Korean leader’s attention to the industry is due to the fact that tourism is not subject to UN sanctions imposed due to the North Korean nuclear missile program and can be used to earn foreign currency.
Let’s recall that in the fall, Kim Jong-un ordered the DPRK’s nuclear arsenal to increase exponentially.
