After the downing of the Azerbaijani plane, the European Aviation Safety Agency warned against flights to Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, St. Petersburg and some other Russian cities.
European airlines have warned against flying to some Russian cities because of air defense operations. This is stated in a document published on Thursday, January 9, by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
Thus, the new Conflict Area Information Bulletin published by EASA recommends that aviation operators avoid flying in the airspace of the Russian Federation west of the 60th meridian east at all altitudes and flight levels. This includes the air regions of Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Samara.
This recommendation is due to Russia’s continued illegal incursion into Ukraine and potential risks to aviation safety in the region. EASA continues to monitor the situation to assess possible changes in the level of threat and risk.
EASA recalled that most of the incidents occurred in airspace not closed by the Russian Federation during drone attacks or activation of air defense systems.
“This poses a high risk for flights, as evidenced by the incident on Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 on December 25, 2024. From the point of view of airspace management, the relevant state (Russia – ed.) did not show fully capable to address existing airspace risks by implementing an effective and proactive approach to airspace deconfliction,” the agency said.
Aircraft operators are advised to follow this advice and avoid flying in the designated airspace until further notice.
This warning is in effect until the end of July.
We remind you that on December 25, an Azerbaijan Airlines plane crashed in Kazakhstan on a Baku-Grozny flight. 38 people were killed, mostly citizens of Azerbaijan. Later, the media reported that the plane was attacked on approach to Grozny by a missile from the Pantsir-S anti-aircraft complex. After that, the Russians banned the crew from landing at Russian airports.
After that, Azerbaijan Airlines, Kazakh Qazaq Air, Israeli El Al, Arab Flydubai and Turkmen Airlines and Serbian Air Serbia refused flights to several cities in the Russian Federation.
