The European Union is ready to take a leading role if US support for Ukraine ends.
According to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kai Kallas, the European Union is ready to play a leadership role if the US support for Ukraine ends. This was reported by Tagesschau on Thursday, January 9.
“The European Union is ready to take the initiative if the United States is not ready,” Kallas stressed before the meeting of the contact group.
However, he is “really confident that all other members, and hopefully the United States, are willing to continue to support Ukraine.”
In addition, Callas advised not to think about future US support for now. He suggests that the United States, regardless of the country’s leader, “is not interested in Russia as the most powerful state in the world.”
Let’s recall that on February 1, 2024, EU leaders at a summit in Brussels agreed on a €50 billion support program for Ukraine called the Ukraine Facility. It is designed for the period of 2024-2027. Subsequently, the head of EU diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, confirmed that the EU will transfer 1.5 billion euros in aid to Ukraine every month.
