The incident occurred during the farewell ceremony for former US President Jimmy Carter. The police arrested the offender.
A man armed with a large machete and three knives attempted to enter the US Congress building, where the casket containing the body of former President Carter is on display. The law enforcement officers stopped him. The Capitol Police reported it on Wednesday, January 8.
“While searching the north entrance of the Capitol Visitors Center, USCP officers discovered a machete in a bag that was scanned by an X-ray machine,” the report said.
After searching the bag, law enforcement found three more knives. Its owner turned out to be a 44-year-old resident of the US capital, Mel Horn. He was arrested on several counts of carrying a dangerous weapon.
The north entrance was temporarily blocked during the incident, but reopened to visitors an hour later.
Police added that public access to the Capitol grounds, where former President Carter’s casket is on display, was not restricted.
It will be remembered that the 39th President of the United States and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, member of the Democratic Party, Jimmy Carter (1977-1981), died on December 29.
Later, 47th President-elect Donald Trump protested that American flags would be flown at half-staff during his inauguration on January 20 in honor of the late President Jimmy Carter.
