A bipartisan group of members of the US House of Representatives, with which the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States is actively working, drafted a resolution in the US House of Representatives recognizing Russia’s actions in Ukraine as an act of genocide. “A draft resolution calling for the recognition of the actions of the Russian Federation against Ukraine as genocide has been re-introduced in the House of Representatives of the US Congress,” Markarova said.
The document’s preamble states that the atrocities committed by Russian troops in Ukraine, including attacks on civilians, direct attacks on maternity hospitals and medical facilities, and the forced displacement of road- hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, including children, in Russia and occupied territories, meet the criteria set by Article II of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
Markarova noted that the operative part of the document condemns the Russian Federation for committing acts of genocide against the Ukrainian people, calling on the United States, in cooperation with NATO and EU allies, to take steps to support the government of Ukraine to prevent further acts of Russian genocide against Ukrainian citizens, and support tribunals and international criminal trials to hold Russian political leaders and military personnel accountable for war of aggression, war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
“Thank you to the congressmen for introducing this important resolution, all crimes of the Russian Federation must be reflected in American law to ensure the punishment of Russian criminals and prevent future heinous crimes. ,” the diplomat emphasized.
Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrei Sibiga, speaking at a meeting of the Helsinki Commission of the United States Congress, called on congressmen to pass a law recognizing Russia’s actions in Ukraine as genocide of the Ukrainian citizen.
The Czech Senate unanimously recognized the mass deportation of the Crimean Tatars as an act of genocide.
