Germany is promoting at the European Union level the easing of sanctions against Syria in order to improve relations with the country’s new leadership. This was reported on Tuesday, January 7, by AFP and the Financial Times, citing diplomatic sources.
In particular, Berlin is pushing to simplify financial transactions with Syrian government services, ease restrictions on the transfer of private capital, and lift sanctions against the country’s energy and aviation sectors.
European Union foreign ministers are expected to discuss the proposals when they meet in Brussels on January 27, with any changes requiring the support of all member states.
It is known that the United States has eased sanctions against Syria in the next six months to facilitate the provision of humanitarian assistance.
The Islamist rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, led by Syria’s new de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, who heads Syria’s transitional authority, officially remains under EU sanctions.
