The first death from bird flu was recorded in the United States.
The patient was over 65 years old and had concomitant diseases. He became infected with H5N1 after exposure to backyard flocks and wild birds, the CDC said.
Louisiana health officials said their investigation found no other human cases linked to this patient’s infection.
Since 2003, there have been about 900 human cases of bird flu worldwide, and more than half have died, according to the World Health Organization. At the same time, experts do not believe that it kills half of the people it infects. Since severe cases are more often reported, mild cases are likely not counted in this figure.
There are no other cases reported in the state and no evidence of person-to-person transmission of the virus.
A genetic analysis of the virus identified in the patient’s body also showed that it was different from the virus in the birds with which he had contact, which may indicate a mutation in the body after infection.
Since 2003, about 900 cases of human infection with bird flu have been reported worldwide, and about half of them, according to the World Health Organization, resulted in death, CNN recalls.
