In the dungeons of the Vilnius Cathedral, the crowns of the Grand Dukes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) and kings were found hidden in a cache in 1939. Among the finds are, in particular, a crown, a scepter and three rings from the coffin of Barbara Radziwill.
The shelter was found on December 16, 2024 in the dungeons, where in 1939, with the outbreak of World War II, the royal regalia were hidden. In the cache were found regalia intended for the burials of the rulers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Poland – Alexander, Elizabeth and Barbara. This was announced by the Archbishop of Vilnius, Metropolitan Gintaras Grushas.
According to him, among the finds are the crown of the Polish king and Grand Duke of Lithuania Alexander, as well as the crown of the squad of the Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland Casimir Jagiellon – Elizabeth of Habsburg, her chain, medallion, ring and tablet from the coffin were found.
A crown, a scepter, three rings, a chain and two tablets from the coffin of Barbara Radziwill, a squad of the Grand Duke of Lithuania and Poland, Sigismund Augustus, were also found.
These crowns were not used during the lifetime of the rulers, they were made after their death and intended for funeral ceremonies, noted Gintaras Grušas.
