Britain is planning a massive expansion of wind power to more than triple current capacity, hoping that cheap renewables will provide the majority of electricity production.
Wind turbines in the UK have overtaken gas power stations as the main source of electricity for the first time, although ambitious targets for a clean energy system by 2030 are still a long way off. Bloomberg reported this on Monday, January 6.
According to the National Grid Operator, wind power accounted for 29% of the country’s electricity production last year, while the share of gas decreased by a quarter.
The UK is planning a massive expansion of wind power in the coming years to more than triple current offshore capacity, hoping that cheap renewables will provide the majority of electricity generation by early next decade. The idea is to both reduce emissions and lower bills for consumers.
The last time gas made up such a small portion of the nation’s generation was in 2013, when coal dominated the system and renewables operated at lower levels.
It was previously reported that the largest offshore wind farm has appeared off the coast of the United Kingdom.
