The US House of Representatives today, January 3, in a dramatic vote re-elected Republican Mike Johnson as speaker on his second attempt.
CNN reports this.
Johnson received the minimum required 218 votes to be elected.
- in the first round of voting, three Republicans voted against him;
- however, subsequently Republicans Ralph Norman and Keith Self nevertheless changed their votes in favor of Johnson;
- Johnson therefore beat Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries 218-215.
Johnson has already taken the oath of office, so now nothing prevents the official announcement of the results of the US presidential election, which Donald Trump won.
A group of 11 House Republicans who were skeptical of Johnson’s election as speaker but ultimately voted for him have issued a letter outlining a list of demands they want him to take on.
In particular, they called on Johnson to add session days to the House calendar, ensure that any reconciliation package includes significant spending cuts, and stop bringing bills to vote that rely heavily on Democratic support or arrive before the 72 hours allotted to members. Fire for their consideration.
Today, we voted for Mike Johnson to be Speaker of the House because we strongly support President Trump and want to ensure his electors are certified in a timely manner, lawmakers said. “We did this despite our sincere doubts about the Speaker’s performance over the past 15 months.”
Listing their legislative priorities, they said Johnson had “no room for error.”
Trump has already congratulated Johnson on his election, saying that he will become a “great speaker.”
