Ukrainians received 44 sentences for launching fireworks on February 24, 2022, according to Babushka. Most of them are fines, however, there are both suspended and real sentences behind bars. More sentences were handed down in Kyiv and the Dnepropetrovsk region.
The number of “failed” fireworks launches has been increasing year on year. If in 2022 only 5 precedents were recorded, then in 2023 17 cases were added, and in 2024 – 22. 52% of sentences are real criminal cases. and suspended sentences (correctional labor).
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ukrainians have been banned from using pyrotechnics. And on November 6, 2023, Law No. 7438 came into force, prohibiting the use and distribution of most fireworks, fireworks and firecrackers. At this time, Ukrainians will begin to be actively held accountable.
The largest number of celebrations with fireworks over three years took place in Kyiv – 11 verdicts. Next are the Dnieper and Odessa regions – 6 and 5 cases, respectively.
In general, the use of pyrotechnics in Ukraine during war is usually punished with fines. Depending on the circumstances and severity of the violation, the courts imposed various fines: from 54 UAH to 34,000 UAH. The last fine for launching fireworks in 2024 was imposed on October 31 in the Kharkov region – 85 UAH.
However, there was a case when in the Poltava region a violator was sentenced to 40 hours of community service for launching pyrotechnics. This happened because the defendant had previously been brought to administrative responsibility – the court recognized this as an aggravating circumstance.
Another man from Nikolaev began 2024 with a one-year suspended sentence for setting off fireworks during an air raid, scaring the local population who heard explosions.
A man from Odessa received an even more serious punishment in February 2023 – imprisonment for 5 years and 3 months. In this case, the attacker’s already existing conventional term played a decisive role.
