Office United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Honduras demanded on Tuesday that authorities in the Central American country launch an “immediate, impartial and comprehensive” investigation into the deaths of six detainees at El Pozo Prison in the country’s north.
At least six inmates died Monday at the El Poso maximum security prison in the city of Ilama, allegedly with violence, according to local media reports.

Thus, the authority demanded an investigation that would find the perpetrators, and also includes the hypothesis of a crime due to prejudice based on sexual orientation, since at least one of the dead was a homosexual.
“The Office expresses its condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirms the obligation of the state to guarantee the life and integrity of those deprived of their liberty,” the UN agency concluded.
The prison where the massacre took place has imprisoned at least 90 members of a gang of 18 known for their links to drug trafficking, hitmen, kidnappings and extortion of traffickers and transporters.
This prison holds about 1,600 prisoners, including about 600 members of this gang.
On January 27, four members of Barrio 18 were killed and 11 others were injured in a clash with other detainees at El Porvenir prison.
About 22,000 prisoners are in thirty prisons, some of which are classified by the authorities of the Central American country as real criminal academies.
Honduras extradite former US president for drug dealing
The Supreme Court (SC) of Honduras has authorized the extradition to the United States of former President Juan Orlando Hernandez (2014-2022) where he will be prosecuted for drug trafficking, a crime that can carry a sentence of up to life in prison in that country.
After reviewing all the elements, the court “held that the appeal filed [por la defensa del expresidente]”, which means that “the decision of the judge of first instance to extradite citizen Juan Orlando Hernandez has been confirmed,” said Melvin Duarte, a spokesman for the judiciary. This decision is final.
Juan Orlando Hernandez will be tried for three crimes. The first dealt with “a conspiracy to import and distribute a controlled substance into the United States.” In this case, 15 SOS magistrates voted unanimously in favor of extradition.
