More than one million Hondurans live in the United States. Almost 25% of the country’s GDP is the money they send from other countries.
In the event of a mass deportation of Hondurans, planned by US President-elect Donald Trump, the US military base in the country will lose its raison d’être. This was said by the President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, EFE reports.
“In the event of a hostile position and mass expulsion of our brothers, we will be forced to reconsider our policy of cooperation with the United States, especially in the military field. For decades they have maintained their bases in our territory without any payment, and in this case these bases will lose all raison d’être in Honduras,” said Castro in his New Year’s address to the people.
However, he expressed hope that the new Trump administration will be open to constructive and friendly dialogue without resorting to unjust repression against migrants who contribute significantly to the US economy.
According to Honduran authorities, more than one million Hondurans, both legal and illegal immigrants, live in the United States, of which 280,000 are on the deportation list.
Remittances sent by Hondurans abroad account for approximately 25% of the country’s GDP, 90% of which comes from the United States. These remittances are the main source of income for many Honduran families.
Let’s remember that Trump, even during his first term in office, said that the United States does not need migrants from “trash countries.”
Mexico will accept migrants if they are deported from the US
