Ukraine has become a full participant in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
According to the speaker of the court, Fadi El-Abdallu, Ukraine is now a full state party to this international treaty and has all the rights and obligations assigned to the participating states.
The most important of them is the right to vote when approving the budget, adopting changes, amendments to the Rome Statute, when choosing judges, the future prosecutor and his deputies, which to a certain extent helps shape the future of international criminal law,” the ISS representative emphasized.
El-Abdallah expressed hope that this new ratification will serve as an example to follow, a sign of confidence in the court.
Having become a full member of the Rome Statute of the ISS, Ukraine received the opportunity to participate in the Assembly of States Parties to the ISS, submit issues for its consideration, vote on the distribution of the ISS budget, participate in the elections of judges and other elected officials, in particular, the prosecutor of the ISS, influence the priorities of the ISS and development of changes to the Roman Charter, writes “Judicial Power”.
This will strengthen Ukraine’s role in the international arena and will improve the international justice system.
National and international criminal law expert Gunduz Mamedov said that although Ukraine signed the Rome Statute in 2000, it was only in August 2024 that the Verkhovna Rada ratified it, and today the country officially joins global efforts to defend justice.
