Belgium has become the first EU country to ban the sale of disposable vapes.
The country aims to reduce the number of new smokers to zero or near zero by 2040 and is taking other steps to discourage smokers and denormalize smoking.
Smoking is already prohibited in playgrounds, sports grounds, zoos and theme parks, and from April 1, tobacco products will no longer be sold in supermarkets larger than 400 m² or displayed in retail outlets.
An official Belgian health survey conducted in 2018 showed that 15.3% of the population aged 15 years and over smoked daily, up from 25.5% in 1997.
College students who vape have lower cognitive scores than non-smokers – Medical Xpress.
Researchers reported the study Sunday at the annual meeting of the American Neurological Association in Orlando, Florida. They found that the more students vaped, the lower they scored on tests of learning, memory, problem solving and critical thinking.
Students who smoked 10 to 20 puffs a day scored 9% lower than nonsmokers, while students who smoked more than 20 puffs a day scored nearly 14% lower, the researchers found.
Previous studies have shown that smoking can affect brain function by shrinking brain volume and reducing blood flow to brain cells, the researchers note in the literature. Nicotine also causes neurotoxicity, which damages brain cells.
